Places to go people to see!

Okay so this week has been a little bit of a weird week as I’ve been away back to Nottingham to see my parent only just got back. To which was pretty non stop the entire time which made things a little crazy on the freelance front. although I did see some good art at Nottingham castle which was fun.

So naturally here I am sat on a train with my handy mac computer and my latest copy of computer arts (The innovations issue!) getting things together for my clients because they need me and plus I pretty much give a dependable service. Last week I did a poster for a new girl band coming and the speed and quality of the work has (hopefully) ensured my long term freelancing with that client finger crossed the guy seemed really happy and did say and I quote ” I will have lots of work for you over the summer” so that seems promising.

I’m also designing a new logo for a smoothie company which is mainly linked with tropical fruit my main focus of that project is for the coconut to look less like an egg… and then we are laughing! but other than that its going well.

I’m also working in conjunction with a eCommerce clothing brand based in Glasgow who want me to design some t-shirts for them for there latest range of t-shirts and there is regular work in that for me which sounds good. so yes I’ve been very busy.

I would add some image to show you some of the work I’ve been up to but for some reason my images keep uploading strange they all look like tiny little ants in size : ( must get that fixed anyone know why this is happening please contact me?!

As most of you have probably seen from my slightly crazy twitter feed. I have been promoting my t-shirt designs the last post I did on this I only had two designs finished but now I’ve gone onto my third and final design. I hope you like it.

I decided to illustrate a sleepy looking fox that gives the impression he is coming out of the t-shirt not really sure why but for some reason I just felt the need to rhyme.

Does your graphic style define who you are?

Ok I’ve been looking through my portfolio this week and I’m trying to piece together my personal style of design and key it down to one thing.
If I could describe myself as one style what would it be? I’d probably say swiss style mainly because it’s something I like myself which reflects in my work. But I also think that my life and the things that surround me influence the kind of work that I produce. I have a tendency to lead towards the bright and simple designs.
I love saul bass and Paul rand and I think I would place them as my biggest influences as well as swiss style.

But I think I get these styles based on my personality and parents. The way they decorate their home the things they buy the home that has surround me for years and although I know longer live at home I find I’ve taken these aspect with me. The things that they like which I guess to me must feel like home. So although my work reflects my personality and tastes my environment has also influenced my tastes in design and the way I perceive design.

And as a matter of fact I’m wondering if I’m the only one that has environmental factor in consideration to there tastes and essentially there genetics. I mean after all if you apply to an agency they consider your style to fit but does this also mean your co workers will have similar traits ideas and Influences as you or am I going on the assumption that everyone with similar personalities should get on.

I just find it very interesting that they way we are born and the things we are exposed to lead us down a certain path way in design and I’m wondering if anyone else out there feels this way?

This week I’m taking part in oh deers T-shirt competition I’ve decided to come up with fairly basic illustrative designs as I feel this is more a reflection of me! of course they are bright and funky and great for the summer time I’ve actually based them on several things I already have or influences *ahem* if you will.

Most of you will know this is my fabulous YCN competition entry which features quite heavily in my portfolio (salad cream).

I love food. I’m not going to lie its one of my passions and really I need to go on a diet but that’s another story! but in other news I mean people do prefer tomato ketchup over salad cream. At least they do in England anyway bloggers.

as you can see there are definite influences there. I just Love this advert and if it wasn’t for copyright infringement with Heinz I would so put this on a t-shirt but unfortunately I can’t so here my illustrated version its cool its quirky its a little bit different and it gives that surrealist edge which I just love hooray for surrealism!  so competition meet competition and this means war!

Here is my second entry for the ohh deer competition.

One day I was at the pub minding my own business well playing the pub quiz (I don’t even drink!) having a humble coke and there I saw a smiling face staring back at me and I just thought i need to take a picture of this maybe it was just my artist way of thinking seeing things that clearly aren’t there (I repeat I do not drink!) but I saw something that summer day which lead me to produce this t-shirt and I like it. It’s cool it’s summery its a bit fun you can wear and the beach or just chillax at home in it.

I now have one more design to think of to add to this collection I think I’m going to have to go back to the drawing board with this one!

Design portfolios what is the norm? or is there not one?

I’ve been thinking about design and recruitment recently and the type of things that must go through there minds as they see a portfolio.

Things are getting more and more digital so does this eradicate the need for a print portfolio although I must say (PRINT IS NOT DEAD)… ahem… but it must be difficult when you have to compare one to another. in different types of medians we now have to view work.

In my experience I’ve been asked for various different things from supplying them with 5 to 6 pdf examples under 5 mb (which I’m sure most designers find quite hard when they want there work to be shown in the best possible light shrinking it down to a small size and not compromising the work quality is tough)

To just being asked to provide a link which is simple enough and makes sense for video and animation positions. But I ask myself are there print designers out there sending promotional pieces of work to companies in order to seek work and what is considered the norm or does the organized savvy designer out there just prepare for every eventuality and hope for the best.

Its made me realize the other day recruitment is tough in the design industry… large amounts of people after one job being sifted through recruiters before you get to go on to the next round  and most of the jobs have a shelf life meaning there career is often uncertain and lets face it … its hard to find a stable job in the design industry because it feels like companies are always on the look out for hot new talent… (at least that’s my opinion anyway) being freelance puts your career in your own hands and puts you in control even when jobs are out of control and you can’t find any leads. I guess thats why people consider it as a career …. you know what to expect when you get out of bed in the morning!….. unless of course you are rudely awoken by the sound of a client ringing your mobile!…

The musical impact of viral marketing

Recently I’ve been pondering about viral marketing. I love it the way you can capture peoples imagination and then spread it like wildfire (which seems to be something that at the moment in this country is quite recent considering the heat wave we have had.) and it occurred to me that sometimes its not always about the advert/video itself but the music becomes a big part.

For example take the first major viral advert that came out when people only knew viral as having a bad cold
Cadburys took to the scene with the gorilla playing the drums, obviously the guy playing the drums was in a gorilla suit, but the attention to detail was amazing and it quickly became the instantly coolest thing to watch on YouTube share and giggle about. But my interest in this is how although yes its a gorilla he is playing the drums HAHA! we forget that the main aspect that brings it altogether is the music of Phil Collins “Air tonight” which brings me to the question: Would this advert have been as successful if a slightly vintage popular song hadn’t been chosen to accompany it? Would the monkey have been just as successful if he was only playing the drums acoustically? and to a song nobody would have heard of? maybe the brand name would have still made it a success.

later on Cadburys decided to do another viral style advert using a queen song and cars which I distinctly remember although they choose a queen track that was very popular. The marketing sank without a trace despite Cadburys reputation I am finding it very difficult to find online. later they did another viral advertisement with children moving eyebrows to the sound of a ringtone and song in a photography booth that can only be described as hilarious, was just as popular as the gorilla although I think this will forever be the most memorable Cadbury’s advert.

After Cadburys took on world domination of the viral infestation. “3” a U.K mobile network released a viral advert which is still current and being use. I find this one interesting as like Cadburys gorilla advert they centre around an animal. In this case a horse and like the Cadbury’s advert the music was a vintage popular song “Fleetwood mac Everywhere” which also proved to be an instant hit.

What I find interesting in these companies is the way the viral marketing correlates with each other. It almost gives big brand a sense of mixing a cocktail of cute animals (we all love animals) doing unexplained things and add it to a feel good track and you have and instant internet sensation and just to thicken this plot it appears other brands are taking notice. 02 have brought out an advert called “be more dog” which features a cat behaving like a dog. the only thing that they lack is the music and I’m wondering the impact that it will have on phone networks such as 3 and 02 it makes me wonder what really is going on behind some of the world biggest company’s door and marketing agencies.

The summer freelance frenzy

ok so as you have probably seen on tv we are experiencing a heat wave here in London/England which has resulted in an increase of U.K citiziens taking a well earned break! (who can blame them)

which is greatly improving the need for little freelancers like me to make their mark on the industry I’ve seen a dramatic increase in the need for work in studios and various other in-house departments needing a designer to fill in for there over worked designer to take a well earned break to relax in the sun.

so needless to say I’ve had a fair amount of work on I still have consistent work from my northern clients which has only fuelled my desire to work north. What with high house prices and earning staying the same the need to live in a more low price society is still something I would like to pursue and what with family being in a close proximity and clients this would be great for me. Lets just say I’m more of a tea drinking that a latte drinker (tea houses should be on the increase in the south us northerner can never get a good cuppa.)

anyway back to the freelancing I’ve gained a more consistant client recently and I’m hoping that the relationship will develop into constant work (fingers crossed on that one)

but at the moment I am looking for work in leeds so if anyone knows anyone who would like to work with me up north give me a bell…./email.

contracts!

well hopefully I am nearing the end with my current client who seems to be incredible relentless to the point where I have had to change my contract. changes here changes everywhere I never get a moments peace (although I do love it ) my partner thinks I’m being taken advantage of and to be honest I agree but part of me wants it to be perfect so when I’m given changes I just can’t help myself so… to save time (mine and my clients) I have capped a limit on the amount of changes and then anything above has to have an added price. I think that’s fair I’ve been reading up on a few handy little tips and hints as far as contracts go.

I’ve successfully managed to advertise my services locally (nothing special just local windows) but unfortunately I haven’t heard back yet *large sighhh…*

At the moment life is very hectic and with my partner looking for a new job and us looking for a new flat my mind has wandered abit admittedly I just need to hang in there.

On the other hand my boss has given me a fantastic job of designing their new home catalogue which I am very excited about it hasn’t come to ahead yet as I am holding out for our photographer to come in and take some beautiful photos.

things seems to have slowed down abit although I am generating abit of interest (I guess) modesty kicking in. people are starting to sit up and take notice of my blog which Is good news for me as I’ve started to get emails coming through!!

The one thing I don’t like about freelance is giving a quote and loving the project the client commiting to that work and then silence ….. the thing is in any other profession things would be different be because we are designers we are down at the bottom of importance of the list. which sometimes I get ( within reason I’ve seen some baaaaddd branding in my time) but its working it into your diary and then it not being there its so hard to plan things and trust me you do need to plan)

although I must say I’ve been having response from everyone from Bristol to Liverpool and I am really enjoying it. It gives my career a new lease of life which I never thought I would get back after graduation day.

Things are definitely on the up….. any way back to the drawing board…. and I mean literally there are logo’s to be done!
